Volunteer with Us
Volunteers help welcome a wide range of visitors coming to York for one of Europe’s largest Viking Festivals.
Festival Events Welcomer Volunteers get involved in a variety of ways across our week of Viking Festival events celebrating York’s Viking history and archaeology. This could be meeting and greeting visitors, offering directions and answering visitor questions on our volunteer run Information Hubs, helping steward events or supporting our interactive staff with our program of hands-on crafting and family events.
Volunteering offers a fun, flexible and short-term opportunity to be a part of the Festival. It is ideally suited to anyone with a love of York’s Viking heritage. Existing knowledge of Viking history or archaeology experience is not needed for most of our roles; all we ask is that you enjoy talking to a wide range of people and help us deliver an excellent experience.
There are a range of opportunities available from a couple of hours to repeated sessions across the week. Across the Festival there are different days and times for you to volunteer.
If you would like to know when we have spaces available or when we advertise any new volunteer opportunities you can sign-up to our Volunteer and Placement Mailing list here
Placements and Work Experience
During the Festival we offer limited week-long placements. These are an excellent opportunity to gain public engagement experience in a heritage and events setting. Some of the tasks include;
- Helping us run our visitor information point.
- Undertaking activities with the marketing department
Placement roles will be advertised here from December – early January each year with placements taking place over the Festival week each February.
If you would like to know when we have spaces available or when we advertise any new volunteer opportunities you can sign-up to our volunteer and placement Mailing list here.
Our placement roles are open to anyone aged 18 or above. If you are seeking involvement and are under 18 you can find further information about our school placement offer on our placement page.
